In reply to Courtney. Whether you need an ESA or service dog depends on whether you need an animal that is trained to perform tasks relating to your disability. If the animal is trained to perform such tasks, then a service dog may be appropriate. If your animal just provides support for your mental health issues through its companionship, then an ESA may be better. You should discuss your needs with a licensed healthcare professional.

I have POTS and suffer from episodes of near-syncope and occasionally syncope. My vision gets blurred at times, I get weak physically, lose my balance, and have tremors. Would I qualify for an ESA or service dog?

In reply to Aurelia. I have OCD, anxiety, depression and an essential tremor. Would I qualify for an ESA? I often break down and feel lonely and I think a dog as a friend would help calm me down.

In reply to Aurelia. A service dog has to be trained to perform tasks related to your disability. If a service dog could perform a task that directly assists with your disability, then you might be a good candidate for one.

I have server Anxiety and the depression. i get horrible panic attacks anywhere and some times i can and cant control them, i have a cat who helps me but she isn’t a esa she is just a everyday house old cat. she is getting old and soon she may pass do you think i should talk to my doctors about a esa t?

Would i be able to qualify for a service dog if i have a rare genetic disorder, arthiritis, and a couple of mental disabilities? i have autism as well with depression and i’m not that well social with people. I also suffer from amnesia and chronic severe migraines which causes me to get really nausous with dizzy spells. I am currently working on living independently as well.

ESAs provide support through companionship and can help ease anxiety, depression, and certain phobias. However, they are not service dogs, and ESA users do not receive the same accommodations as service dog users.
