In reply to Lynn. It is true that many mental health professionals are unfamiliar with the benefits of an ESA. When seeking the help of an LMHP for the purpose of seeing if you are eligible for an emotional support animal, it is beneficial to find a therapist that is familiar with ESAs and ESA letters.

The problem is that many mental health professionals will not write letters for ESA animals even when this is determined to be an important part of their patient’s therapy and well-being. In cases of patients at great risk for suicide, this is still sometimes declined on the part of the mental health professional. The human-animal bond has been documented as an important part of therapy and recovery for many mental health situations.

A distinction should be made between legitimate ESA providers that pair clients to licensed mental health professionals who conduct assessments, versus scam services that issue letters for payment without the involvement of an LMHP. We agree that fake ESA services are problematic, and should be curtailed.
